WHAT IS SAUNA HALOTHERAPY?
Halotherapy is derived from the Greek, Halo, meaning “salt”. Also known as Salt Therapy, Halotherapy is a holistic treatment that reproduces the natural microclimate of a salt cave by dispersing a high concentration of micro salt particles into the air.
Each brick of Himalayan Pink Salt is unique, with different hues of pink and white that swirl together to give off the appearance of stained-glass. This unique coloring comes from a high concentration of minerals and trace elements. When gently heated by the warmth of the sauna, the salt crystals release these minerals enriching the quality of the surrounding air which is breathed in and absorbed by one’s body.
It is also thought that heating the Himalayan salt crystals activates the hygroscopic (moisture absorbing) properties of the salt. This process releases negatively charged ions that attach themselves to bacteria, fungi, viruses, dust, and other pollutants; cleansing and purifying the air.
A LITTLE HISTORY KNOWLEDGE OF HALOTHERAPY
In the 1840s, a Polish doctor named Feliks Boczkowski noticed something interesting while treating workers in the Wieliczka Salt Mines. Unlike other miners who routinely experienced lung problems from breathing in the pollutants in the mines, he found that patients rarely had respiratory issues. Boczkowski attributed this to the high salt content in the cave’s microclimate and he published a treatise detailing his theories in 1843. Several years later one of his pupils opened the first salt inhalation clinic in Poland. Today, Boczkowski is considered the father of modern Halotherapy.
This wasn’t the first time people had drawn the connection between salt content in the air and improved respiratory health. Catholic monks in times in Europe regularly brought people with respiratory issues into salt caves and then crushed the salt with their feet to release it into the air. Salt therapy was also used in the days of ancient Greece and Rome.

Following are the benefits you can get when you use the Himalayan Salt Sauna:
1. By breathing in Himalayan salt, you can stimulate your respiratory system’s natural ability to ward off infections, reduce inflammation, clear blockages, and more. This makes it really useful and beneficial for individuals who suffer from allergies, asthma, colds, flu, and more. Salt saunas, particularly ones that involve the use of Himalayan pink salt, can greatly help with various respiratory conditions. By inhaling the salt, your body will break up any excess mucus which is due to allergies while at the same time promotes the restoration of the pH balance in your sinuses and lungs.
2. A few minutes of a sauna session will help boost your immune system. By adding Himalayan salt, you can gain a major boost in your body’s resistance to disease. According to several medical studies, treating yourself in a Himalayan salt sauna will help reduce the symptoms of cold and flu. It can also help boost your immune system by increasing your body’s overall white blood cell count.
3. Aside from working through your respiratory and immune systems, Himalayan pink salt used in a sauna will also get absorbed through your skin. With the help of a sauna’s warmth, the pores in your skin will open up, thereby allowing approximately 80 beneficial minerals in the salt to get easily absorbed by your body. Individuals who’re suffering from acne and other forms of skin conditions use salt saunas or halotherapy for treating their condition. Although it’s just one form of comprehensive treatment, those who undergo salt sauna sessions regularly were able to experience some noticeable improvements in their skin.
As far as skin health is concerned, the regular use of Himalayan pink salt sauna is proven to be beneficial in relieving the symptoms of eczema. This is possible by increasing the blood flow in the skin as well as reducing the inflammation, swelling, redness, itching, and drying.
4. Lastly, the use of a Himalayan salt sauna regularly will allow you to get a deeper and more relaxing sleep, hence making you feel refreshed upon waking up. This makes it ideal for those who are suffering from insomnia and other sleep-related conditions.
Regarding preventative respiratory hygiene, while there are no long-term studies that provide evidence that halotherapy can be used to treat this Coronavirus (COVID-19), it is widely known that dry salt therapy has antibacterial and antiviral properties that could be beneficial to PREVENT such diseases.
